Phantom error appears in Device Manager

I remain unconvinced that I have a problem since my PC appears to work perfectly, but McAfee First Aid reports that my PCI legacy audio has a problem and that the ISA plug and play device has a driver file missing. Similarly, system information reports the Via Tech VT82C596 PCI to ISA bridge as a problem device with 'error code 2'.

I have recently upgraded from Windows 98 SE to Windows Me and now the Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation mark against the VT PCI to ISA bridge. Selecting properties for this device results in the statement, 'Windows could not load the driver for this device because the computer is reporting two isapnp.vxd bus types (code 2). Contact the manufacturer for an updated Bios'.

I downloaded and install the latest Bios (Phoenix 3.7) from the PC manufacturer's website, but the problem remains. Do you have any suggestions?

The incorrect reporting is probably the fault of the Bios, but that's not to say it has been fixed in the new version you downloaded. It's not uncommon for phantom devices and other errors to appear in Device Manager, and it's usually futile trying to eliminate them. The fault is the reporting of the error and, if there are no other indications that anything is wrong, the best thing to do is ignore it.
